5 Things To Know Before Arriving At Duke Kunshan University
  1. Download Didi, the equivalent to Uber and Lyft in China. This will make your life much easier when you need to get to and around Kunshan.
  2. Get a phone number as soon as possible. Once you have your number, you’ll be able to open a bank account and link that to AliPay.
  3. Get to know the cafeteria staff and you will never go hungry. The ladies staffing the kitchen are absolute angels and know you’re away from home. They’ll make sure you’re eating well.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Between the MMS Association, program administration, and student affairs office, there is no shortage of people to help you make things happen.
  5. If you forgot to bring something, it’s OK! Taobao, an online marketplace similar to Amazon, is your best friend. You can find almost anything you need on there. If you can’t read Chinese, use BaoPals, which will translate everything to English!
What I Love About the MMS Community

The thing that I love the most about our school and program is the type of person who becomes a part of the team here. Regardless if this person is a student, professor, alumnus, or part of the administration, he or she will contribute to your success through diversity of experiences and perspectives, as well as simply being there for support. So far, I have received wonderful support from the Career Management Center and alumni throughout the carrying out of my duties as social chair and throughout my job search.

Why I Chose MMS

While my accounting undergraduate education is something I will always be thankful for, I knew accounting wasn’t something I would enjoy as a career. The MMS program was the perfect choice for me to explore other fields and supplement my entrepreneurial experiences with managerial analysis. On a personal level, I also wanted a school that would push me to grow as an individual. When I learned about Fuqua’s focus on teamwork, I knew that this was a school that shared the values that were close to my heart and would allow me to thrive.

Before MMS
Prior to pursuing my MMS degree, I spent nearly 2 years working for a startup and helping to develop the eSports industry in Toronto. Prior to our work, there were only small- or large-scale events. We ultimately proved consumer demand and gained support from tech companies and sponsors, enabling us to create more frequent, mid-size events.
After MMS
Technology and consumer products have always been interests of mine. I am pursuing a career in the eSports industry. Video games have always been a large part of my life, and I want to be a part of their development.
